Of
the world’s roughly 10 million coffee farmers, 95% are smallholder
family farmers. With an integrated approach, TechnoServe believes
smallholder coffee farmers can set an example of environmental
sustainability while improving their livelihoods and enhancing food
security.
One of the sustainable development programs TechnoServe administers is the Water Wise Coffee TM, a program led by Mother Parkers Tea & Coffee and Marley Coffee. The Water Wise Coffee program works with local wet mills in Ethiopia, which process coffee beans from smallholder farmers from nearby villages.
For years, wet mills in villages would discharge the byproducts of coffee processing – wastewater and pulp – directly into rivers. Water Wise Coffee worked with local coffee producers to implement a low-cost sustainable solution which would enable them to continue operating without polluting the rivers: the creation of vetiver grass wetlands. With this approach, the water mills were able to eliminate virtually all of the water pollution caused by coffee processing while increasing the quality of the coffee they produced.
